Panafest is the acronym for Pan African Historical Theatre Festival. It is celebrated from late July to early August biannually. For instance, the festival years in the 21st century are July/August 2001, 2003, 2005 2007 and 2009...etc. This festival marks African history and civilisation.
It therefore attracts people mainly of African descent from all over the world and many others, including educationists and researchers who are interested in African culture and civilisation. It is fast becoming one of the most popular "black" festivals in the world. Cultural performances, lectures and symposia are among the various activities. For those who want to attend, it is advisable to confirm reservations at least six (6) months in advance.
Visitors are very excited when their visits coincide with any of the many traditional festivals of the chiefs and people of a traditional area. Most festivals are concentrated between July to September. Chiefs are usually decked in full regalia and carried in hammocks or palanquins with their huge state umbrellas with a large retinue. Festivals are celebrated to commemorate unique historical cultural events. The kente cloth is best displayed during festivals.
